What is a Co-operative Trust School?

The Co-operative School Trust model enables schools to set themselves up as educational and social co-operatives, following co-operative values and principles. Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self- responsibility, democracy, equality, solidarity and equity. In the tradition of their founders, co-operative members believe in their ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. The ethos and values of Longleaze Primary School, Lyneham Primary School, Noremarsh Community Junior School and St Sampson’s Infant School align very well with the values and principles of the Co-operative Movement.

The Co-operative Trust model is a mutual membership model. It enables those who are directly involved in each of the schools such as parent/carers, staff and learners, to become engaged in their long-term strategic direction through membership of the Trust. It will also allow those more indirectly involved, such as other members of our learners, families and indeed well-wishers within the wider school community, to become involved.

What is a Trust School?

This is a type of school that, while still being part of the local authority family of schools, has the opportunity to be supported by a Charitable Trust set up to help the drive for improved standards in each school, in particular through engaging with the wider community and further raise aspirations. Trusts can be set up by individual schools or groups of schools and involve formal collaborations with partners.

Governors at Longleaze Primary School, Lyneham Primary School, Noremarsh Junior School and St Sampson’s Infant School propose to be a particular type of trust school, a Co-operative Trust, creating between them a long-term partnership that brings together the Co-operative Movement, and other partners. As well as the Co-operative Movement, the Local Authority and a number of local schools, we expect other partners to join over time.
